Three tips for comment theming in Drupal

Today I’m just demonstrating a few simple theme adjustments to comments. Comments in Drupal 5 are “not sexy”, out of the box, so in this short post I’m going to illustrate how to:

change the text on “submitted” lines in comments (just a little)
add nofollow to username links – unless you’re feeling generous

remove the “not verified” marker from anonymous users

It’s no surprise that Google and friends “move the goalposts” quite frequently to keep a rein on certain search engine optimisation techniques. What is considered a perfectly legitimate way of getting web traffic one month, may be a complete no-no the next.

So it’s important to keep on top of which techniques are still going to help, and even more so, which ones could be harming your site’s progress. Last year, several ways of gaining traffic – some, years old – were crushed.

Page not found? What would Google do?

The Google Operating system blog posted this short article about “page not found” (aka 404) errors.

These errors can be frustrating for users, as they are often uninformative if not properly handled. For example, an unmanaged 404 from an Apache web server simply says “404 not found” and another short sentence saying almost the same thing. No help text, nothing.

Drupal SEO - the CMS gets vote of SEOBook Guru

I’ve known for a long time that Drupal is great for SEO. Earlier this week I was quite surprised to read a post from SEOBook’s Aaron Wall reckoning that Drupal is part of the “wave of the future,” however.

Aaron says: I think I am pretty good at predicting web trends, and 2 or 3 years from now Drupal will be about as popular and well known as Wordpress and Wikipedia are today.
