I knocked together this article a little while back for Koding University. Koding is a web based development environment for pretty much anything, in fact they give you a root environment for free. It's somewhat limited, but if you want to play around with exotic features under root access and Drupal 8 at the same time without messing up your local install or similar, the article might be helpful to you.
Koding is a developer community and cloud development environment where developers come together and code in the browser – with a real development server to run their code.
